Short biography/Curriculum Vitae  

South African. Born 23-4-43 in Johannesburg. Obtained B.Sc. Hons. and Ph.D. from University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (1964 and 1970). Post-doctoral guest cancer researcher of the Atomic Energy Commission (US) at Molecular Anatomy program of Dr Norman Anderson in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA (1969-1970). Senior cancer researcher at C.S.I.R., Pretoria, South Africa (1965-1974) specialising in molecular differences between normal and cancer cells. Chief specialist medical researcher-lecturer in the Department of Pharmacology at University of Stellenbosch, South Africa (1974-1996). Published 35 peer-reviewed papers, textbook on “Principles of Chemotherapy” and 3 US patents. Newly elected representative for Africa on the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) International Affairs Committee. Associated with the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) for past 29 years as Grantholder, Chairman of Western Cape Regional Council, Research Co-ordinator and currently as the first Cancer Research Advocate in South Africa helping to translate cancer research results into policy. Details of particular skills 

  • Nutrition and the prevention of cancer: Instigated and succesfully drove an advocacy process whereby the amount of folic acid legislated to be used for fotification of maize meal was doubled (2000 ug/kg). This could help to decrease the risk for oesophageal cancer in black South African males.
  • Verification of cancer statements: Hoax e-mails on cancer are increasing.. I have specialised in rapid response verification mechanisms using Pubmed, experts and scientific background and dissemination of correct information over the radio. (See www.cansa.org.za –FAQ).
  • Co-ordination of large projects translating research results into practical measures. (Have been involved in 10).
